Preparation Time
- Preparation: 20 minutes
- Rising Time: 1 hour 30 minutes
- Baking Time: 20-25 minutes
- Total Time: ~2 hours 15 minutes
Ingredients
For the Dough:
- Egg: 1 large
- Sugar: 3 tbsp
- Salt: 1/2 tsp
- Active Dry Yeast: 1 tsp
- Warm Milk: 180 ml (3/4 cup)
- Butter: 40 g (2 tbsp), melted
- All-Purpose Flour: 400 g (2.5 cups)
Instructions
1. Activating the Yeast (5 minutes)
- Warm the milk to about 100–110°F (37–43°C), ensuring it’s not too hot to kill the yeast.
- In a small bowl, combine the warm milk, yeast, and 1 tablespoon of sugar. Stir gently and let it sit for 5–10 minutes until frothy. This indicates the yeast is activated and ready to use.
2. Mixing the Dough (10 minutes)
- In a large mixing bowl, whisk the egg, remaining sugar, and salt until well combined.
- Add the frothy yeast mixture and melted butter to the bowl. Mix until smooth.
- Gradually add the flour, 1/2 cup at a time, mixing with a spatula or your hands until a soft, slightly sticky dough forms.
3. Kneading the Dough (10 minutes)
- Transfer the dough onto a floured surface.
- Knead for about 8–10 minutes until the dough becomes smooth and elastic.
- If the dough is too sticky, add a little more flour, but be careful not to overdo it. The dough should remain soft.
4. First Rise (1 hour)
- Place the kneaded dough into a lightly greased bowl. Cover it with a clean kitchen towel or plastic wrap.
- Let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until it doubles in size.
5. Shaping the Buns (15 minutes)
- Once the dough has risen, punch it down gently to release excess air.
- Divide the dough into equal portions, about 10–12 pieces, depending on your desired size.
- Roll each piece into a smooth ball and place them on a greased or parchment-lined baking tray, spacing them slightly apart.
6. Second Rise (30 minutes)
- Cover the tray with a kitchen towel and let the buns rise again for 30 minutes.
- Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C) during this time.
7. Baking the Buns (20–25 minutes)
- Brush the tops of the buns with a little milk or a beaten egg for a shiny, golden finish.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 20–25 minutes, or until the buns are golden brown and sound hollow when tapped on the bottom.
Allow the buns to cool slightly before serving. Their pillowy texture and subtle sweetness make them perfect for a variety of uses—served with butter and jam for breakfast, as a side to savory dishes, or simply enjoyed plain. You’ve just made bakery-quality buns in your own kitchen!
